Hundreds of people, including those covered in Yakuza-style tattoos associated with Japan's organised crime syndicate, gathered in Tokyo for Sanja Matsuri annual celebrations on Saturday.

On the second day of the three-day event, people were seen carrying portable shrines 'Mikoshi' on their shoulders, which are believed to bring luck and prosperity to locals.

The Sanja Matsuri or Sanja festival, held on the third weekend of May at the Shinto Asakusa Shrine, honours the founders of Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple Senso-ji, and garners two million visitors annually.
