1950 HITS ARCHIVE: Nevertheless (I’m In Love With You) - The Mills Brothers (their original version) Nevertheless (I’m In Love With You) (Kalmar-Ruby) by The Mills Brothers

“Three Little Words,” MGM’s big-screen biopic of songwriters Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, successfully revived two of their best-known ballads: “Thinking Of You” from 1928 and “Nevertheless” from 1931 (check out the vintage Jack Denny version, also posted to this channel).

Four 1950 record releases of the song reached the top 10 on Billboard’s various singles charts, and this Mills Brothers version deserves a special footnote for marking (in a sense) the end of an era. After many years during which most of their greatest recordings followed a similar vocal arrangement with only very minimal accompaniment, “Nevertheless” would be their final hit in that predictable pattern. Sy Oliver, Sonny Burke and Hal McIntyre would be giving the quartet a brighter big band backing in future Decca sessions. See also the Paul Weston, Ralph Flanagan and Ray Anthony posts.

THE 1950 HITS ARCHIVE - here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs that made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1950 (some were recorded in 1949).
