Development budget worth Rs46 billion was reserved for higher education last year but Budget 2019-20 allocated only 28 billion. The relevant authorities fear that this reduction will have a negative impact on the HEC’s new initiatives, particularly the opening as well as revamping of public sector universities in the country.
Recently-announced initiatives will have to be delayed or halted. These include a university in Hyderabad and the ‘advanced study centre’ at PM House
The projects for expansion of existing universities and the promises of opening new universities in backward districts will also be put on the backburner.
Educationists have also warned that the cutwill lead to higher fees and will restrict access to higher education, particularly for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds PTI made tall claims about empowering the youth, but this does not seem to be its priority after assuming power
