For family films, Disney movies aren’t always kind to the family unit. Many parents, mothers especially, are absent or have passed away. And when parents are alive and well, their relationships with their children, whether those children are biological or adopted, are often troubled in some way. Of course, there are the parents who are outright evil like Lady Tremaine from Cinderella and Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Yet, there are also the parents whose actions have an insidious impact on their children like The Sultan from Aladdin and King Agnarr and Queen Iduna from Frozen. Even parents that aren’t part of the story make choices that set their children up for problems, like the King from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sid’s parents from Toy Story.
