The WORST SMALL TOWNS in AMERICA. Part 2.

The WORST SMALL TOWNS in AMERICA. Part 2. Part 2: These are the places in America where there's nothing to do, and people are broke.

Link to Part One:

Summary: We visit small towns in America that most people wouldn’t want to live. We stop in places in rural Kansas, Nebraska and Alaska. Mrs. Mappy hires a lawyer to secure her paid role as a contributor to the program. Rated PG.

Would you ever live in one of these teeny towns? The places we’re going to talk about today are a lot like that. In fact, all of them are the worst places you could live in their respective states. In order to determine our list, we looked at the teeniest places in every state where there’s little to do for fun or for work.

Now, some people are gonna look at these cities and think - you know - these places don’t look so bad. And you might be right. Some peace and quiet means no drama, traffic and trash.

So, you decide if these teeny towns are for you or not.

Now, let’s hop in our time machine and fire it up as we get ready to visit the small towns in America you’d never want to live in. Or maybe you would.

5. Longton, Kansas. Wow this teeny place definitely looks like we stepped into the past. There’s only 348 people here. If you moved to Longton, there would be some good news and bad news.

The good news: There’s actually a few things to do in town. They have a Drive-In and the reviews are pretty good at the Cozy Inn Cafe. The best news? Houses here cost $24,000 each. And you’re not too far away from Wichita.

4. Our next stop? Bettles Alaska. Looks like a blizzard is going on here. This place is about as isolated as you could possibly be in America. Your nearest town is Coldfoot, which is 3 hours and 32 minutes away. That’s just a truck stop, where only 10 people actually live.

The only way you can get things is to have them delivered by plane, but that’s okay since Bettles has its own airstrip. It looks like the whole city IS the airstrip and people live right on the edge of it. So their driveway...is a runway. That’s cool!

3. Okay so we get to warm up for good, as we start to get towards the end of the road. Our third to last stop on the small towns in America where you’d never want to live in or maybe you would, is Belpre Kansas.

Belpre checks all the boxes for unappealing. 84 people who make $14k a year, and where homes sell for $22,000. Belpre is a speck of a place along Route 50, a bit east of Kinsley. If you moved here, 14% of your neighbors - or 11.6 people - would be out of work. There are many hard working Kansas farmers who can attest that a formal education is merely a formality.

2. Steele City, Nebraska. It's not the safest place. More than 10% of folks here are out of work, and home prices are about $24,000 each.

Most people in Nebraska earn their living the hard way. This chart shows that the biggest gains in employment in Nebraska are supposed to be truck drivers and butchers. That’s some small town stuff.

Steele City is along Route 8 way down near the Kansas border. And about a 3 hr and 45 minute drive to Belpre Kansas.

1. Escobares, Texas. Now, you can imagine how unnerving it is living in a teeny little town right along the US Mexico border. The town buts right up against the Rio Grande River. This little town of 1,100 people is 92% hispanic, which means you’d better brush up on your Spanglish if you wanna make this your home, hombre.

This is actually, statistically, the poorest city in America, where the average individual brings in about $6 k a year.
