The Turkish army and Turkish-backed Syrian militia advanced into the Syrian town of Tel Abyad, Sunday, October 13. Tel Abyad is a town on the Syrian border and one of the main focal points of the Turkish offensive that began on Wednesday against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based organization that reports on the conflict, said Turkey and its allies were in almost complete control of the town.
Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey's military and its Syrian militia allies will advance 30-35 km into Syrian territory in their offensive against Kurdish militia and they have already seized control of the town of Ras al Ain.
More than 130,000 people have been displaced from rural areas around Tel Abyad and Ras al Ain as a result of fighting between Turkish-led forces and Kurdish militia, the United Nations has said.
Meanwhile, Syrian Kurdish officials says hundreds of suspected Islamic state supporters and family members have escaped from a displacement camp in northern Syria, as Turkey continues its military operation in the area.
Jelal Ayaf, co-chair of the Ayn Issa Camp, estimated 850 foreigners linked to IS escaped and had help from sleeper cells that infiltrated part of the camp. Escaped IS family members and supporters are thought to include those from Britain, Ireland, Russia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia.
