Finasteride is effective for hair loss, but it can sometimes cause unwanted side effects.
Finasteride is a prescription medication taken as a tablet that may prevent and reverse hair loss.
Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT.
DHT is a potent male sex hormone that causes hair loss.
Unfortunately, despite the effectiveness of finasteride, it may cause some side effects.
These side effects may include decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, difficulty in maintaining an erection, rashes, and an increase in breast size and tenderness.
More serious but less common side effects may include, swelling of the body, depression, and nipple discharge.
In general, finasteride side effects are reversible and relatively uncommon.
When you stop taking finasteride, the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme which converts testosterone into DHT will no longer be blocked, and your body will begin to turn more testosterone into DHT.
If you are genetically predisposed to lose your hair, your hair loss will presume once you stop taking finasteride.
If you want to avoid the potential side effects of Finasteride altogether, non-invasive treatments like laser therapy could be a great alternative.
RedRestore’s Laser cap uses wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to increase blood flow to your scalp, combat DHT and improve follicle hair health.
Quitting finasteride cold-turkey to get rid of side effects is generally a good idea, as side effects may persist with continued use.
Keep in mind that the effects of finasteride on the target 5-alpha-reductase enzyme can last up to 30 days.
This means that side effects may not disappear immediately after stopping.
Switching to a lower dose might also help to alleviate side effects.
Although a lower dose may not be as effective for hair regrowth.
The bottom line is that finasteride can cause side effects, but these are reversible and not permanent in almost all cases.
