J7409 Weather DEC 5,2019
watch
Reasonably quiet weather is expected for the end of the week compared to
the active pattern over the past couple of weeks. Snow is expected to fall
across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast due to lake enhancement and
then a clipper system moving across those regions. Total snowfall
accumulations will generally be 1 to 3 inches, with accumulations up to 6
inches locally.
Precipitation is forecast for the Four Corners region today behind a
surface low pressure system--a few Winter Weather Advisories remain in
effect for the Central/Southern Rockies through this afternoon. As the low
moves eastward, rain showers and a few thunderstorms will develop across
the Southern Plains to Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley this evening,
spreading into the Tennessee Valley and Southeast Thursday night into
Friday. Rainfall totals should generally be a half an inch or under.
An upper-level low spinning over the Eastern Pacific will cause a front to
slowly approach the West Coast Friday. Precipitation should increase in
the West Friday into Saturday, with locally heavy rain and some localized
flooding forecast for lower elevations of northern California. Snow is
likely in higher elevations of the Shastas and Sierra Nevada. By Saturday,
precipitation will spread into the Intermountain West.
Generally dry conditions should persist elsewhere over the U.S., but
stagnant air could lead to air quality concerns over the West Coast to
Intermountain West. Warmer than average temperatures over the
Southern/Central Plains to Mississippi Valley on Thursday will cool down
on Friday after a cold frontal passage.
