How to make a Questionnaire for Research In this video Dr Tahir Yaqub explains how to make an effective questionnaire for doing research on any topic or to get answers to a particular research question. This video is useful not only for PhD students but anyone who is part of a research group such as market research etc and wants to prepare a set of questions to conduct a survey or get answers to a particular research question. There are two types of questions in any questionnaire. One are open-ended questions where the participants have to think about before answering your questions and you do not provide any options to chose from. Then there are some closed-ended questions where the survey participants have to chose one option out of the given two or more options.
If it is possible for you to categorize the options then you should avoid putting any open-ended questions. Also, you must try to always minimize the number of questions because if there are two many questions then there are three possible issues. The first is that you might duplicate the questions, the second is that there might be some confusion and the last but important thing is that no one wants to do a long survey. Then an important consideration is that whether the survey should be taken in one time frame or it should be taken in two or more time frame. If you cannot avoid open-ended questions which is sometimes the case when you are doing some very serious research then you try to put these before the closed ended questions. And you must always pre-test your survey before the actual study to find out if there are any issues with your questions and
to make sure that your participants are not misinterpreting your questions.
