Javier Castellano was one of five jockeys to win multiple stakes last week, and he was the only one to win five stakes races. Three of his stakes victories came in graded stakes.
On Friday, Castellano won five races on the card. The five starts were consecutive mounts for Castellano, and four of the five were in consecutive races on the card. He began his streak with an allowance win aboard Eons ($8.80), then won the $100,000 Skipat Stakes with Chalon ($3.20), the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes with Dogtag ($8.20) and the $150,000 Miss Preakness (G3) with Covfefe ($5.60), in which the winning pair set a new track record.
In the feature race on Friday’s card, Castellano and Point of Honor ($7.80) closed with a driving, 4-wide move around the turn to win the $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) by a half-length.
Castellano returned to the winner’s circle on Saturday to take the $250,000 Dixie Stakes (G2) with Catholic Boy ($4.80).
Castellano was the second leading North American jockey by both total earnings and by stakes earnings. His performances in stakes races netted $646,500, and his earnings for the week totaled $729,026. In 2019, he has earned $10,375,819 and has career earnings of over $327 million to date.
With six wins for the week, Castellano maintained a win rate of 28% and he finished in the money in 59% of his 22 starts. Castellano has won 73 of his 342 starts in 2019 and he is 5,096 for 27,904 lifetime. He reached a career milestone of 5,000 wins last fall at Belmont.
Voters also expressed support for Tyler Gaffalione, who rode War of Will to victory in the Preakness Stakes (G1) on Saturday. With his single stakes win, Gaffalione led all jockeys by stakes and total earnings. The Preakness was the first victory in a Triple Crown race for Gaffalione.
