Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya accused western countries of attempting to 'sustain a terrorist presence in Idlib' during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York City on Tuesday.
"Let's recall the mockery of the Security Council by those countries who became accustomed to accusing the Russian Federation of this. The goal of all these calls, that is absolutely clear to us. The goal here is to sustain a terrorist presence in Idlib and, in the future, to use this presence for the purposes of combatting the legitimate Syrian authorities," Nebenzya said.
"This happened each time when the end of another terrorist enclave in Syria was closed, that's happening to the eastern Aleppo and eastern Ghouta. And now, their propaganda machine is firing full artillery around the situation in Idlib," the Russian diplomat added.
US Ambassador for UN Management and Reform Cherith Norman Chalet said that the situation is Syria was growing more "dangerous by the day" and suggested that Russian and Syrian forces were deliberately targeting schools and hospitals, and using information shared by the UN to find their targets.
"The number of civilians killed and injured is rising, water facilities, schools and hospitals are targeted by regime and Russian forces, despite the fact that the coordinate of these locations are shared with the Russian Federation through the UN's deconfliction mechanism, specifically to prevent them from being hit," Chalet said.
